Metonia Powell Morgan 65 Roses Strategic Intent Get Down Convention Alter Ego (Manchester)

Designer Magazine presents. Undercover Alter Ego Metonia Powell Morgan Sixty5 Roses Strategic Intent Get Down Convention Venue Alter Ego (formerly Mutz Nutz) Princess Street Manchester Date 5th July Doors 7.30pm Price £6 on the door £5 before 8pm with a flyer Metonia On the back of collective frustration and in need of a fresh approach Dave John and Paul formed Metonia in the Spring of 2004. Throwing ideas round a cramped practice space they succeeded in finding themselves. With influences ranging from Doves Radiohead and Broken Social Scene the band achieved a sound built around the quality of their song writing. From soaring choruses to an intimate edginess Metonia have got the lot. From the beginning Metonia have always been about the live experience. The raw approach to their songs allowing the band to give themselves completely to the music has left many an audience stunned. The only way is up Dont hurt your neck http w.myspace.com metonia Powell Morgan And Sixty5 Roses They call it Prog Pop. But the music of Powell Morgan Sixty5 Roses seems to remind every listener of something uniquely personal. Attempts to categorise the sound have resulted in a wild variety of comparisons from Brian Wilson Robert Plant living in Bombay to Simon Le Bon fronting System of a Down. After many years of obsessive writing and recording Pm&65R have developed a complex and ambitious style with a forensic attention to detail. The music draws on elements of classic rock and metal 80s pop Middle Eastern European vocal influences delivered as a true &quot wall of sound&quot This diverse blend of influences gives the band an immediately identifiable sound densely layered with three-part vocal harmonies effect-drenched guitars intricate arrangements. Early demo reviews were universal in praise but wondered how such an enormous sound could be recreated live. Proving that the material sounded even more epic delivered onstage the band played a series of stunning live shows including support slots with New York s Blood on the Wall (Social Registry) Canadas The Hidden Cameras (Rough Trade) Seattle s Eastern Conference Champions (Seratone) My Latest Novel (Bella Union) and The Hours (A M) in addition to headlining Manchester s world famous In The City festival. The band s detachment from any type of scene has given them a real purpose to provide an alternative and their genuine understanding and appreciation of so many genres has allowed the freedom to mix elements of any influence at any time in any way. http w.myspace.com powellmorgan Strategic Intent Strategic Intent are a five piece band from Stockport with a sound that the music industry has described as post-punk indie For the last 18 months they have been making a name for themselves around the North West receiving airplay on stations such as Xfm Manchester whose listeners voted them Clint Boons unsigned band of the week and playing commanding live performances at venues such as Liverpools Cavern Club and Manchesters Academy 3. The band was formed in February 2006 and released their debut album An Eye For An Eye in April of the same year the record eagerly received by their rapidly growing fan base. A number of tracks from this album have featured on Dvds charting the rise of bands such as My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy. Their live work has seen them supporting the West Midland s up and comers &quot Untitled Musical Project&quot and opening for Scottish all-girl rock band &quot The Hedrons&quot during their recent tour. September 2007 saw the release of Strategic Intents new Ep Are We Having Fun Yet? a collection of four new songs displaying their wide range of musical influences and skills. What People Have Said About Strategic Intent &quot Strategic Intent do it for me None of your pretentious bollocks here just proper rock tunes no messin Theyll be doing big things through 2008 quot Clint Boon Xfm Manchester http w.myspace.com strategicintent Get Down Convention &quot The Get Down Convention are a 5 piece outfit from West London and combine catchy and varied songs with an explosive and energetic live performance quot &quot Their musical style is hard to define filling a void between pop punk and rock with a dash of electro and cabaret quot &quot Monday came and as usual people are a bit reluctant to let themselves go on the first week night. Well step on stage Get Down Convention please. These fine young men had attitude quirkiness and a great front-man&quot Official website you say?
I Am Three Play dry Bar ( Dry Bar)

I am Three are an acoustic duo from Manchester. The two members Hughes (acoustic guitar vocals) and Irving (double bass vocals) cut their musical teeth over several years in bands and solo projects and began performing together in 2008 by taking a set of original songs and unveiling them at impromptu shows in cafes art galleries shop and restaurants. Mixing music normally heard in dark greasy live music venues and a relaxed daylight setting. The combination of I Am Three s two song writers and their opposing interests create a genre defying mix of identifiable styles such as grunge alt-folk blues hip-hop. Their low-key spontaneous unplugged performances continue in the UK along side a handful of concerts and in October they are staging a series of shows in France Netherlands Germany Italy as part of their first European tour. w.myspace.com jesuistrois

Live turkish and kurdish music (Manchester City Centre)

Free live music from Paula Darwish and her Country and Eastern Band a unique fusion of music in turkish english and kurdish. The Country and Eastern Band fuses the spirit of rock with eastern rhythms and melodies. Paula Darwish was born in England to arabic parents and started the band in Manchester 6 years ago. Together they present an eclectic selection of songs bringing 400 hundred year old Anatolian Folk songs bang up to date with imaginative and inspired remixes Her voice is both memorable and unique and she is a skilled lyricist in the english language.T. Somehow it all fits together and when they effortlessly slip in a Nashville country ballad you wont even notice the difference. This special semi acoustic set will focus more on the quieter chilled out side of their music and some of their lesser known songs. Tonights band line-up includes saz darbuka flute piano bass guitar and drums. Times 6-7pm Venue Royal Exchange Theatre Great Hall St Anns Square Manchester M2 7dh 0161 833 9833

This is a day for us to explore the essence of who we are and learn about the healing power of our voice. Carmel has trained in the Healing Power of Sound with Chris James from Australia and is co-ordinator for UK events.

25 Jul 2008 The Swan With Two Necks 65 Chestergate, Macclesfield, Macclesfield, Sk11 6dg (Moho Tib Street, Manchester, M4 1sh)

Race the Train: have you got what it takes? (Tywyn, Mid Wales)

Have you ever felt the need to do something extraordinary to experience something that will leave you feeling on top of the world and able to accomplish anything you put your mind to? The you have what it takes to make a difference. We are looking for runners who would like to take part in Race the Train one of the most unique events in the sporting calendar. Held in Tywyn mid Wales this event tests the endurance of the runner against one of mans greatest inventions the steam train. We are recruiting people to run in the main race (23K) or the 10K race whilst raising funds for the Red Cross through sponsorship. Places are allocated on a first come first served basis. Registration is £20 and the minimum pledge is £150 this amount alone would pay for the Red Cross to train 15 people in life saving first aid skills. All the money raised will support our community services across Wales such as providing short-term care and support in the home for people after an accident or illness giving them the confidence to continue their daily lives. If you are interested in taking part on our behalf please contact Gladys McCrea on 01745 828337 or you can send an email to the above address. Thank you for your time and we hope that you will be able to support us.

M19 Bar In The City Jazz Blues Showcase 847 Stockport Road. Levenshulme. Manchester. M19 3pw (Moho Tib Street, Manchester, M4 1sh)

A Celebration of British Country Music (Mossley)

This will be an all-day event from 130 p.m. to 1130 p.m. and will feature 4 of the best 4 5-piece country bands from the North of Britain with 6 hours of live country music plus recorded country music between acts. The idea for the event is to try and increase the general awareness and acceptability of modern British Country Music not only to the present Country audiences but also to music lovers in general. We hope that those who appreciate good live music but have not previously been to a British Country Music event will give it a chance and we re sure they ll have a really enjoyable day. The bands have been chosen to provide a good variation of modern country music with an emphasis on self-penned music and the lesser-performed material which should appeal to a wide range of music tastes and hopefully will go some way toward changing the general perception of Country Music in Britain. The bands in order of appearance will be Settlers Creek a 4-piece band from Blackpool playing modern country covers and including a selection of the band s original material. Brian Hughes and the Lonesharks a 5-piece band (guitars drums and keyboard) from Scotland playing mainly original material from Brian with a few covers. Buchanan a 5-piece band (guitars drums and steel guitar) from Manchester playing mainly the band s original material (including tracks from their 2007 album of the year The Picture Raising Cain a 5-piece Country Rock band (guitars drums and keyboard) from Cumbria and the North East playing a unique selection of covers with a number of the band s originals. Each of the bands are recording a new Cd and all are expected to be available during late summer. The venue is the George Lawton Hall Mossley Tameside (Ol5 0hr) situated in East Manchester near Oldham with easy access from the local motorway network. There will be a fully licensed bar large dance floor with hot cold food available. Advance bookings for the event are now being taken at £15 adult and £8 for accompanied children (11-16 For more details contact Trevor or Lynne on 01457 833421 or see the website w.cbcm2008.co.uk
