Litigation Lawyer - Temporary
Working on a temporary contract basis for a Central Government Department based in Manchester starting January 2010 until January 2011
Requirement:
The work covers a substantial caseload of Customs Duty appeals, pursuant to the Community Customs code, before the Tribunal ( Tax Chamber ). There are also some County and High Court cases mainly stemming from condemnation proceedings under the Customs and Excise Management Act.
Key Responsibilities:
Day to day responsibilities will include maintenance of case files, liaison with operational and policy colleagues, courts and counsel.
Key Knowledge and Skills:
The legal professional skills required of the post are as follows :
1. Understands the main features of public law, basics of judicial review, human rights, EC law and constitutional law.
2. Has reliable legal judgment and appreciates legal risk, identifies and explains legal options, giving a steer as appropriate; extracts key legal issues.
3. Produces and communicates sound legal analysis, using secure legal research; understands where law is found and how to use it, how to interpret statutes, case law and other sources of law and how to use evidence.
4. Is able to develop an in-depth understanding of the legal issues that are specific to the post, understands the specialist aspects of the law relevant to the post and the legal context within which policy/operational colleagues work.
You need to have completed the LPC and training contract or 3+ yrs relevant PQE, and hold a current practicing certificate.
